Ministry of Education to regulate School fees

By Melanie Aanyu,
The ministry of education and sports has finalized a draft statutory instrument on school fees where the government wants all non academic fees in schools scrapped.
Media reports indicate the fees will include development fees, contribution towards buying school buses and new school facilities.
The proposal will also affect contributions made by students towards founding bodies such as churches and mosques.
Students and parents will be barred from remitting funds to schools for teachers associations.
The draft further proposes that the number of support staff be reduced at schools .
The document states that the increasing number of support staff has contributed to an increase in school fees.
Sources who participated in the formulation of the draft explained that the non-academic charges alone ,account for close to 50 percent of the school fees.
The source explained that non academic are the major drivers of high school fees.
