Learners in Mbale City stranded As Ongoing Teachers’s Strike Enters Third Day

By Melanie Aanyu,

Learners in government schools in Mbale City and its surrounding areas have today stayed at home as the ongoing teachers strike enters the third day.

Most schools visited by Time fm this morning(Friday) were found non operational although some Headteachers and some support staff had reported.

At Nabuyonga ,Northroad and Namatala Primary Schools among others in Mbale City there were no pupils present.some teachers said they are waiting for the official communication from Uganda National Teachers Union(UNATU) before they can take the next steps.

Earlier the Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Mbale,Ahamada Washaki during his visit to various schools within the city said he found that teachers in most schools were striking because they wanted a salary increment.

Washaki advised teachers to put themselves in the parents’ shoes
who have had to sacrifice the little they have to get children back to school after dealing with the Covid 19 induced lockdown.

He said they should reconsider their industrial action for the sake of the learners, since the government plans on paying them, starting with the science teachers.

The Education minister Janet Kataha Museveni is expected to meet teachers today to resolve their grievances .
